Men and Miscarriage: Navigating the Silent Grief
Miscarriage is a profoundly painful experience, yet much of the focus often centres on the physical and emotional impact on the woman. While this attention is necessary and justified, it can leave men feeling sidelined, unsure of how to process their own grief, or how to best support their partner. I understand that men experience miscarriage in deeply personal and often unspoken ways. My aim is to provide a safe, supportive space to explore these emotions, validate your experiences, and help you find a way forward.
One of the unique challenges men face in dealing with miscarriage is the societal expectation to remain strong and stoic. Many men internalise their feelings, assuming that their role is solely to support their partner, leaving little room for their own grief to surface. This can lead to feelings of isolation, confusion, or guilt for mourning a loss they never physically carried. In our sessions, we can work together to unpack these emotions, acknowledge the loss, and explore how you can express your grief in a way that feels authentic and meaningful.
Miscarriage can also strain relationships, as partners may grieve differently. While one person may need to talk openly and often about the loss, the other might prefer solitude or distraction as a coping mechanism. These differences are normal but can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or tension. Through counselling, I can help you navigate these dynamics, fostering empathy and communication between you and your partner. Together, we can create a shared approach to healing that strengthens your connection during this difficult time.
You don’t have to face this alone. I am here to listen without judgment and help you process the complex emotions that come with miscarriage. Whether you are wrestling with feelings of anger, sadness, helplessness, or uncertainty about the future, our work together can help you find clarity and peace. Healing takes time, but with support, it is possible to move forward with resilience and hope.
Men, if you are carrying the trauma of miscarriage/still birth, I’d love to help you to talk about it and walk through the darkest valleys with you.
